Hi. I was pleased to see a couple of nice tributes by Steve to his old English teacher, Tony Harding, at Aske’s in SE London. I went there too, 1975-1982, but wasn’t taught by AJH, alas. It didn’t stop him from giving me Auden’s Selected Poems, though, when I was about to leave and had to hand in any books I still had, with a slightly sad, “Keep it, it’ll be more use to you than anyone here”. What I didn’t know at the time was that Tony had known Auden well, as he was Professor of Poetry when Tony was at Oxford. That would have made for some fascinating conversations. Apologies for the rather tangential post, but thanks to Steve for re-evoking some good memories.
