Just seen Steve on Daily politics. You had some very valid points to make, especially about addiction to gadgets and the decline of reading (not just amongst young people in my opinion). Just to let you know though, if you don't like what's written about you on Wikipedia you can change it!
Oh, and if you think that's a load of rubbish, check out the entry on uncyclopedia:

Thank you Steve, for bringing up something that has been creeping in and now seriously threatens normal human interaction. As a touring musician I can identify with a bus full of recharging iphones and adults clicking away and not talking. It even follows you into the concert, with dressing rooms resembling talk centres. The most annoying aspect is that most of the stuff going on is meaningless chat but how dare you disturb someone (who is obviously "busy") with non virtual stuff. I can't deny the benefits of tech, broadband changed my life, and I teach music technology and use it for recording. Remember not long ago when an entire tourbus of people would all grab their pockets when a phone rang? They are all too busy twitting now, and we have reached the next phase of reality... Deafcom 3.
Keep it up
Cheers

I watched it too. Agree with everything Steve said. "Blimey" said my daughter, looking up from her lap-top "he sounds just like you, innit?"
If anyone's thinking of watching it on i-player Steve doesn't make an appearance until about 12.50 but Prime Minister's Questions were worth a watch.
Nice garden Steve

I suspect that invaluable physical experiences and real practical skills are being devalued by the perceived wisdom of pushing electronic virtual worlds at children.
Language skills can not be learned by watching enless crap cartoons from dawn til dusk.
In support of the trend, an education related lady said that 'the children love the interactive white boards' I bet that they'd also love writing on black boards if they could, and talking to real people.
Seeing serried ranks of little faces frowning at screens, I am reminded a 'story' book that I read around 1965. Its futuristic plot followed a journey of realisation of a boy. He had been assessed by the education authority as having insufficient intelligence to qualify for entry to the 'Skill Programming Centre'. That was a place where 'normal' adolescents had their vocational skills directly induced into their heads (by a machine), and from which their graduation was celebrated. By contrast, he and his parents suffered the ignominy of him being sent to the 'School For The Uneducable'; an secluded secure residential establishment, where he had to devote himself to a prolonged regime of toil and study of books and things, and from which there would be no celebrated graduation.
But he escaped, and merged with a crowd going to watch the 'Skill Olympics', where he saw a former friend actually competing in an event. But his friend failed to finish. He sought him out to ask what had happened. His friend didn’t know how to fix the deliberate fault that had been set in the machine. Then he asked why he hadn’t simply referred to the machine’s operational instruction manual.... I won't spoil the rest of the plot.
Nowadays, I see many echoes of that prophetic story.
Can anyone remind me of the name of the book or its author?
And a closing thought, if you’re a parent worried that your kids might arrive home with more studs implanted in nose or navel, wonder what might be around the corner. Laboratories have experimented with growing brain cells on silicone chips! So, if your darling arrives home with a stuffed up nose, look up closely to see if it could be due to a badly fitted multitasking keyless ‘3G_NoseJob’?
